The Beatles' seventh album was released in early August 1966. Following the release of Rubber Soul the group had embarked on what was to be their final UK concert tour and following a lengthy break, they returned to Abbey Road to record continually for three months. The first recordings released from these sessions, engineered by Geoff Emerick, was the single "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" and those tracks gave an indication of what was to come  . The latest Beatles album 'Revolver' certainly has new sounds and new ideas, and should cause plenty of argument among fans as to whether it is as good as or better than previous efforts. One thing seems certain to me - you'll soon all be singing about a 'Yellow Submarine'.

The Beatles haven't necessarily left their Pop-rock sound, and they're just beginning to explore the limits of their musical potential. But we do see the band performing numerous experiments with their sound in this album, and beginning to tap into their illustrious creativity. Revolver begins with "Taxman", which has a very typical guitar-driven sound, but its most intriguing aspect is the lyrics which center a around political theme rather than the usual tales of romantic escapades.

The album featured a bigger Indian influence than Rubber Soul, particularly on Love You To, one of three songs Harrison contributed to the record- his personal best. It also featured backwards vocals and tape loops on songs such as She Said She Said and Tomorrow Never Knows, and some of the Beatles' most innovative instrumentation on Eleanor Rigby and For No One. The central theme of the album is death, both literal and metaphorical.

While this may be an excellent intro for beginners, real fans will never be content with only selections, especially when you're dealing with those aforementioned albums. It's another of their heavier songs again revolving around a catchy riff played on a distorted guitar. The band only released one new studio album that year, Revolver, and representing this album are two more McCartney songs, Yellow Submarine and Eleanor Rigby.

The Twelfth Album" is an alternative history short story by Stephen Baxter, first published in Interzone in April 1998. It is about an imaginary twelfth album recorded by the Beatles, called God. The album features songs that were written and recorded as solo projects by the group's members in reality, but in a parallel universe where the Beatles did not split up following the release of Let It Be, resulting in these songs being recorded by the group.
