Clutch is the 29th studio album by Peter Hammill, released on his Fie! label in 2002. Clutch contains nine tracks played exclusively on acoustic guitar with accompaniments on saxophones and other instruments. The album was produced and played by Hammill himself, with contributions from Stuart Gordon on violin and David Jackson on flute and saxes. In the liner notes he states that even though the instrumentation is mostly acoustic, it is not a "folk" album.

Superior production and sound choices in the arrangements department make Clutch a must-have in Peter Hammill's discography. Fans of the man's folksier side are especially in for a treat. Hammill deliberately wrote and performed these nine songs on acoustic guitar. The only other instruments are Stuart Gordon's violin and David Jackson's saxophones, appearing on five and three songs respectively - no programmed drums or questionable keyboard presets, two features that usually weaken the impact of the man's extremely potent songwriting.

I wouldn't say that this album should be your entry one into Peter's repertoire. It is meant for solid Hammill addicts. Clutch" is a fine album which is mostly concentrated in the strong lyrics and the passionate vocals.

Complete your Peter Hammill collection. I'm a big Hammill fan but this (mostly) acoustic and vocal album is not really my cup of tea. I prefer his voice framed within a richer, denser musical setting. There is nothing substandard here, tracks such as 'The Ice Hotel' and 'Bareknuckle Trade' are top notch and need to be heard and appreciated more!

Musically, this guitar-heavy affair is up there with "What, Now" and "This" as one of his best in recent years. Hammill sings and plays massed acoustic guitars backed up by considerable sax and violin from David Jackson and Stuart Gordon, and the results, though not quite an album's worth of "The Comet, The Course, The Tail," are very satisfying

Peter Hammill: Clutch. Stewart Lee. January 12 2003, 12:00am, The Sunday Times. HISTORY is being rewritten. Suddenly it seems Peter Hammill, the former Van Der Graaf Generator frontman, was not an overblown, pretentious madman, and is instead recognised as a quintessential English genius, to be ranked alongside William Blake and Wyndham Lewis by those who have never read either. Hammill is, in fact, capable of both momentous folly and awe-inspiring artistry, but such a daring performer is bound to fall on his face occasionally

Clutch is an album by Peter Hammill, released on his Fie! label in 2002. Clutch contains 9 tracks played exclusively on acoustic guitar with accompaniments on saxophones and other instruments. Clutch is widely considered a solid return to form after his erratic output in the late 80's and 90's.

No the problem lies with my personal like/dislike of a particular 'approach' of his (decisions I assume he makes very early in the conceptual realm) so I'm going to say 'average' but only because of the presentation. Still that LP closer blows me away every time...
