Ray Conniff came out swinging with this debut album, laying the groundwork for his increasingly refined and unique arranging style. Combining high quality songs with rich yet ethereal voices, touches of 50's exotica and a ferocious swing, Ray sounds like he was having the time of his life trying out his newfound sound, the singers and musicians approach the material with unbridled joy and enthusiasm. All the factors of his success are on 'S Wonderful - except that this album predated the invention of stereo. It still sounds good, but I miss the feeling of music coming to you from every direction that Conniff achieved in all his later albums. I loved his music and so did lots of other people and for the next 40 years Conniff sold piles of records.
Ray Conniff had a solid career of big band arranging and conducting the orchestras backing Columbia Records' stable of '50s pop singers before he managed to get his name on a record himself. But that didn't prepare anybody for the success of this album, named after the Gershwin song he first arranged when he was working for Artie Shaw
