Introducing Kenny Burrell is the debut album by American jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, recorded in 1956 and released by Blue Note Records. In 2000, the album was released on the 2 CD-set Introducing Kenny Burrell: The First Blue Note Sessions with Kenny Burrell Volume 2, plus bonus tracks.

Kenneth Earl Burrell (born July 31, 1931) is an American jazz guitarist known for his work on the Blue Note label. His collaborations with Jimmy Smith produced the 1965 Billboard Top Twenty hit album Organ Grinder Swing. He has cited jazz guitarists Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt as influences, along with blues guitarists T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters. Burrell is a professor and Director of Jazz Studies at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

Despite its title, this LP was actually guitarist Kenny Burrell's second Blue Note album, although the first to be released. Teamed with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Kenny Clarke and the conga of Candido, Burrell displays what was already an immediately recognizable tone. At 24, Burrell had quickly emerged to become one of the top bop guitarists of the era, and he is in particularly excellent form on "This Time the Dreams on Me," "Weaver of Dreams" and "Delilah

Kenny Burrell is just such a person. In fact he's more – he's living history, past, present and future. What was it like at the famous session you co-led in 1958 while recording the Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane album? That was what we called a blowing session put together by Prestige. I was happy to be in the circle of people called for that. We were each expected to bring in one or two songs. In the process, there’s no time for rehearsals. You run something down once or twice and record it. I had to be on my toes, but was with great people.

Kenny Burrell - Verve Records. Kenny Burrell - a man with the ability to convey differing moods like few other guitarists. John Coltrane’s complete 1958 Prestige recordings features 37 tracks, including ‘Stardust’, ‘Good Bait’, and ‘Little Melonae’. All the recordings took place in New Jersey at Rudy Van Gelder’s home studio, created during a series of 3-hour sessions. Listening to Kenny Burrell makes me wanna slip into a slinky dress, which I can still wear, find a guy who’s spent more than a grand on black flannel suit, head out of a delightful dinner, one where the chef actually comes out to see how the meal was, and then off for a midnight blue show of light bebop atmospheric jazz, cozy drinks that allow my mind to shift into low gear, and finally exhale all the little undefinable edges that have been building up over the last few months. Obviously my first choice would be Kenny Burrell, a cat who’s pensive style has evolved over the years, yet still delights in crafting albums that define jazz in all of it’s elements, moving in time from swing, to bop, to hard bog, to the abstract and etherial, and back agin without missing the proverbial beat ... a man who’s songs don’t come at and assault you, rather they evolve and morph, seeming to exist within you, as he takes you on a smooth journey that highlights the sensational solid work he’s done with John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis, yet leaves you thinking that it was these great artists who sought him out, rather than the other way around. Perhaps it’s that in 1956 Burrell moved to New York City, where he actually played in the Broadway orchestra pits, where he was able to challenge all he’d learned for his BA in Musical Composition & Theory at Wayne State University, and discover immediately what it took to rise to people’s expectations and desires.There’s a super body of work to be found here, and if you’ve got the ear, more ghosts than you’d ever have expected float in and out of his guitar, including his mentor, classical guitarist Joe Fava, the hands of Tonny Bennett and Lena Horne, for whom he was a sideman, though as I said, for my way of thinking, folks like those merely highlighted Kenny’s magic ... then there’s Billie Holiday, Jimmy Smith, Kenny Dorham, and a host of others who’s styles and meanderings have found their way into Kenny Burrell’s mystically and pointed compositions, that if anything, show what an artist can do when talent is smacked up against style and grace.This is a substantial collection that’s well worth your time and considerations. My only regret with Kenny Burrrell is that I wasn’t there in 2006 for his 75th Birthday Bash, which was recorded live ... meanwhile, I’ll sit here with my blue notes and dream.Review by Jenell Kesler
