Lali Puna's debut album mixes the lush, hushed tone of early Stereolab with the glitch and crackle of electronic experimentalists such as To Rococo Rot, and adds a touch of lo-fi analog beats that wouldn't sound out of place on a Land of the Loops album. Bubbly bass blips mingle with Valerie Trebeljahr's dreamy vocals, as an undercurrent of moody synths paint atmospheric swirls. The album is encumbered somewhat by a few instrumentals that linger just beyond one's interest, but Tridecoder is never a dull listen, despite its mood music leanings. Like the works of their Morr Music peers, Lali Puna's debut is music that would seem contemporary in just about any decade prior to its release, and probably any decade after its release. The band members breathe life into their electronic tools and never stray from the smart, emotional aesthetic and arrangements that signify a Morr album.

Tridecoder ‎(CD, Album). Morr Music, Hausmusik, Darla Records. Melancholy permeates this album. Even the uptempo, spoken word "Rapariga Da Banheria" or the pumping house of "System On" have a quiet sense of sadness lingering in the background. Fast Forward" brings that feeling to the forefront, and it sweeps through the entire track.

Lali Puna is a Munich-based electropop band originally from Weilheim in Oberbayern, Germany. Valerie Trebeljahr, the lead writer and singer, comes from Busan, Korea. The name of the band, meaning Valerie from Busan, references this, as Lali is a diminutive form of Valerie, and Puna is a childish spelling of Busan. Which is often translitterated Pusan) She also lived ten years in Portugal before moving to Germany, and that's reflected in some of her songs, featuring lyrics in Portoguese.

Led on vocals by Valerie Trebeljahr, the rest of the band consists of members of The Notwist, Tied &Tickled Trio and Console.

Germany's Lali Puna's debut, 'Tridecoder' reminds me much too much of Stereolab. And, while I really enjoy Synth-pop, I'm not too enamored with either Stereolab or Lali Puna. There appears to be much love for Valerie Trebeljahr whom I find, frankly, underwhelming This debut is lackluster.

If there were ever a sub-genre called glitch-pop, Lali Puna would be the ones to own it. Even from their first album, TRIDECODER, you've got the quiet melodies, clicky rhythms and Valerie's icy vocals floating atop. Melancholy permeates this album. Even the uptempo, spoken word "Rapariga Da Banheria" or the pumping house of "System On" have a quiet sense of sadness lingering in the background. "Fast Forward" brings that feeling to the forefront, and it sweeps through the entire track. Subtle, and sublime.
Hilarious Kangaroo
That first release from lali puna is a wonderful mix of sad pop melodies and well-crafted and subtle glitches made by the men from console. Valery's voice, the lead singer (singing mostly in cold, spoken words) fits perfectly with the music. That album came at a right moment, boosting the indie-electronic buzz around bands like Ladytron and Chicks On Speed. I highly recommend Valery's side project Iso68 which is darker and slower than Lali Puna.
