Various - The Other Side Of The Trax (Stax-Volt 45rpm Rarities 1964-1968) album flac

Many of our recent Stax compilations have concentrated on the company’s later era – the yellow period, as it’s known in collector circles – but we’re starting our 2016 schedule with a project that draws on releases from their earlier blue period.

The Other Side of the Trax: Stax-Volt 45rpm Rarities 1964-1968. Remarkably, none of the 24 singles on The Other Side of the Trax have seen release on CD and these are no obscure acts, either. Johnnie Taylor, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, William Bell, the Mar-Keys, Eddie Floyd, Sir Mack Rice - these are the artists that built Stax-Volt into a Southern soul powerhouse between 1964 and 1968, the years when Stax released their 45s on a blue, not yellow, label.

Side 1. 1. Barbara & The Browns - "I Don't Want Trouble". Rufus Thomas - "Fine & Mellow". 4. The Mar-Keys - "Grab This Thing" (part 2). 5. The Premiers - "You Make A Strong Girl Weak". 6. Carla Thomas - "The Puppet".

Each of these B-sides fell through the digital cracks but The Other Side of the Trax does a wonderful service of collecting these dynamite sides, presenting almost all of them in their original mono mixes (Taylor's "Changes" is the only one with a new stereo mix). By popular demand Ace have followed up their first volume with a second set of recordings from Stax’s ‘blue era (60-68)’ that had previously never seen a reissue or CD or vinyl. The overriding style – that unmistakable bluesoul flavour – is there throught with highlights including Carla Thomas’ ‘I Want You Back, Sir Mack Rice’s ‘Mini Skirt Minnie’, The Four Shells’ ‘Reputation’, Barbra Stephens ‘I Don’t Worry and ‘Never Let You Go’ from Rufus & Carla Thomas. Will please fans of the first volume, this is mooted to be the final instalment of the series.
