Das Floß der Medusa, by Hans Werner Henze, is based on the painting of the same name by Géricault, which commemorates the victims of the shipwreck of the Medusa (1816). In 1968, the German composer Hans Werner Henze caused a huge scandal with Das Floß der Medusa. The premiere of this oratorio was abruptly called to a halt by the police just before curtain-up, following the riot that erupted in the auditorium when a large picture of Che Guevara was unrolled. Fortunately, recordings had been made of rehearsals, which were broadcast by Norddeutscher Rundfunk. The premiere eventually took place in Vienna in 1971.
Hans Werner Henze (1 July 1926 – 27 October 2012) was a German composer. His large oeuvre of works is extremely varied in style, having been influenced by serialism, atonality, Stravinsky, Italian music, Arabic music and jazz, as well as traditional schools of German composition. In particular, his stage works reflect "his consistent cultivation of music for the theatre throughout his life".
Hans Werner Henze) Born in Gütersloh on 1 July 1926, Henze received his earliest musical training at the Braunschweig Staatsmusikschule. As a child, he witnessed the branding of modern music, art and literature by the Nazis. After having worked as a répétiteur at the Bielefeld Stadttheater Henze began to study with Wolfgang Fortner at the Heidelberg Institute for Church Music in 1946. In the late 1940s he came across serialism and began to attend the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music
