Arthur Jones is one of the forgotten men of free jazz. An alto saxophonist out of Cleveland, he made his mark during the Parisian summer of 1969, when a horde of (primarily) American free jazz players made their way to France for gigs and recording contracts with the upstart label BYG/Actuel. Despite being co-billed to Jones and Delcloo, Africanasia is not a sax-drums duo album. In fact, it’s more of an unofficial Art Ensemble of Chicago record than anything else- Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell and Malachi Favorsall appear (the former two playing flutes, the latter log drum).
2. Africanasia, Pt. 2. Claude Delcloo, Arthur Jones.
Arthur Jones (1940, in Cleveland, USA – 1998, in New York City, USA) was an American Free Jazz alto saxophonist known for his highly energetic but warm tones. Jones first played for several years in a Rock and Roll band. After discovering music by Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy, he started appearing on the New York scene, playing in Frank Wright's group where he took part in the recording of the Your Prayer (1967) album. He then also worked with Jacques Coursil.
