Another strong LP from Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' late-'60s renaissance, Special Occasion was driven by an opening trio of Top 40 hits ("If You Can Want," "Yester Love," the title song), the first of which was not only the biggest hit from the album, but one that illustrated the Miracles could do funky material a. A few of the album additions are below the quality of most Miracles' songs (Norman Whitfield's throwaway love lyric on "Everybody Needs Love" is particularly embarrassing), but the group made the most of even mediocre songs like Robinson's "Your Mother's Only Daughter" and "You Only Build Me up to Tear Me Down.

The Miracles (known from 1965 to 1972 as Smokey Robinson & The Miracles) are an R&B/soul group from Detroit, Michigan, United States notable as the first successful group act for Berry Gordy's Motown Records. The Miracles went on to become one of Motown's signature acts of the 1960s, during which time their original lead singer and founding member Smokey Robinson became one of the most successful songwriters and record producers of all time.

Lyrics to "Special Occasion" song by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles: Hmm, hmm, yeah Special occasion Like when you dress up In your tie and tails Yeah, yeah Special occa. Hmm, hmm, yeah Special occasion Like when you dress up In your tie and tails Yeah, yeah Special occasion Every time and it never fails. To give me a thrill That's fresh and new Every time I'm kissin' you It's something that you do That makes every time you kiss me. A real special occasion Like one that calls for A toast of champagne Yeah, yeah, yeah. Special occasion Every time and It's hard to explain. album: "Special Occasion" (1968).

Special occasion, the album occupying the second half of this twofer, made the top 50 of the American pop album charts and the very top of the R+B album charts. It didn't chart in Britain. Smokey Robinson wrote or co-wrote all but two of the songs. Of these, If you can want (the first single) just missed the top 10, while the other two (Yester love and Special occasion) were minor hits. Like the first album here, the album is of a consistently high quality throughout, with plenty of great music. Britain was slow to really appreciate Motown, but interest increased in the late sixties. In 1970, another old Smokey Robinson and the Miracles album track, Tears of a clown, was released as a single. It did far better than Tracks of my tears, going all the way to number one in the UK charts.
