Louis Armstrong (1901–1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American trumpeter, composer, singer and occasional actor who was one of the most influential figures in jazz and in all of American popular music. His career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in jazz.

The JATP concerts were regularly recorded and they are well represented here, none finer than the 1946 concerts featuring Charlie Parker and Lester Young, the old school and the new school. Then there’s Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich at JATP in 1952 sharing the mother of all drum battles. But it’s also jazz played in the setting of an intimate club that is wonderful. Whether it be at The Village Vanguard, Mr Kelly’s, or The Lighthouse, The Five spot or Birdland  . Seems like my favourite live jazz album didn’t make the cut. Recorded Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival by John Handy.

ALL TIME BEST OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG (aka Louis Armstrong's Greatest Hits) includes the original KAPP singles of "Hello Dolly" and "What A Wonderful World. These and three other tracks come from the MCA archives. He was like a colossus, straddling the two worlds of America's involvement in war beginning with the wars to end wars and the war to divide. His birthday and death day are so symbolic, but his music always served as a means of trumpeting the important things of life: happiness in love-"Hello Dolly," young love-"Blueberry Hill (Louis sings a haunting ballad, unlike Fats Domino, who added just a tinge of lust in his version laced with the halting dance rhythm of the stroll).

The music and many of the solos will be familiar to longtime Armstrong fans, but whether it be "Struttin' with Some Barbecue," "Basin Street," or his then-new hit, "Mack the Knife," the spirit and enthusiasm of this music is irresistible. This is his best live set in the '50s.
