I picked up Parker Millsap's eponymous debut album on a whim from my local used CD store last year, and from the first few minutes of my first listen, I was enthralled with Millsap's talents with guitar and harmonica, his vocals, and his ability to tell a short story in song. I hardly listened to anything else for at least a month, and my only regret about that chance purchase was that I would have to wait nine months for more.
Album · 2016 · 11 Songs. Sin, salvation, fire, and brimstone haunt every nook and cranny of The Very Last Day. Raised in the Pentecostal church, Oklahoman Parker Millsap infuses his mix of rockabilly, folk, and blues with the power of the Holy Spirit. With its searing fiddles and swinging rhythms, the Tulsa sound-inspired Hands Up breathes pure fire. Meanwhile, the rollicking Hades Pleades is a smoke-spewing locomotive headed straight for the underworld.
Oklahoma native Parker Millsap turned a lot of heads after releasing his self-titled album in 2014, whether from the striking maturity of his songs or the otherworldly blues-tinged howl that relayed them. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter, who was nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2014 Americana Honors and Awards, frequently dealt with spirituality and sin on his self-titled album, notably with the rollicking Truck Stop Gospel
Those who were first exposed to singer-songwriter Parker Millsap on his well-received 2012 self-titled album, or better yet saw him and his fiddle/bass backed duo live, knew this was a young artist who was beginning to find his voice
The Very Last Day" sees Millsap expanding upon the distinctive voice he built for himself - both in terms of timbre and songwriting - on his self-titled, tackling his themes with a newfound nuance and continuing to impress with his sympathetic but reticent takes on organized religion. The reason it doesn't quite match his debut, in my eyes, is that Millsap backs away a bit from the Red. Or consider a donation? End of year lists.
Leave it to Parker Millsap, one of the most arresting and puckish young singer-songwriters to emerge in the Americana scene this decade, to turn the jarring nature of apocalypticism on itself in the most enthralling way. The story goes that he started writing for his new album, The Very Last Day, in the midst of a bleak Oklahoma winter and, instead of seeking sunny diversion from his surroundings, embraced the grimness, binge-watching The Walking Dead and reading Cormac McCarthy's The Road
