Rosaly plays with a feather-stroke touch, dropping a hint of pulse here or a splash of color there, while Jackson’s marbled tone expresses a lovely lyricism no matter how brusque or serrated his lines get. Berman and Unternahrer play quicksilver, high-low brass games: the cornetist excels on the instrument’s lower registers and scratches up his liquid high notes, while the tubaist simulates snatches of bass lines and blows floor-rumbling long tones that resonate with the snaking lines that Jackson and Berman produce.

Drummer Frank Rosaly's superb debut as a bandleader, Cicada Music (Delmark), began as the soundtrack for Scrappers, the 2010 documentary about Chicago scrap-metal scavengers. His original score featured both sparse percussion pieces, some of which were mixed with audio verite recordings of scrap yards featured in the film, and elegant compositions recorded with some of the Rosaly's cohorts from the local jazz and improvised music scene. Below you can listen to "Driven," which starts as a melancholy ballad but opens up with plenty of scalding, extroverted multireed improvising.

Why does tenor saxophonist Keefe Jackson call this band Project Project? Is it because he gives composition and improvisation separate identities and the merges them skillfully? That's just a thought. His ability to write and orchestrate music that sings and celebrates, and then have members of his band incise it with an unabashed sense of adventure, makes for glorious listening. There is never a dull moment, with inspiration constantly nudging surprise
Leader Keefe Jackson has an ear for memorable head tunes, and some of his arrangements even remind me of Mingus. The tunes balance improvised duets with ensemble passages, enabling Jackson to coax a variety of colors from his chosen musicians. It's also the only song not written by Keefe Jackson - drummer Frank Rosaly wrote it. Besides the creative written-out sections of songs, there's the solos, mostly in a free-jazz vein. The soloists are listed on the CD liner notes, and may be soloing while parts are going behind them, or they may be soloing over a duo or trio. So how good is it? The first time I listened to it, I was very disappointed.
Jackson Carey Frank (March 2, 1943 – March 3, 1999) was an American folk musician. He released his first and only eponymous album in 1965, produced by Paul Simon. After the release of the record, Frank was plagued by a series of personal issues, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia and protracted depression that prevented him from maintaining his career. Frank spent his later life homeless and destitute, and died in 1999 of pneumonia
