Hagerty and Herrema released their first album, Royal Trux, in 1988, then, after moving to San Francisco, Royal Trux released the experimental double-album Twin Infinitives. In fanzine interviews, the band was open about their heroin use, after Twin Infinitives, Royal Trux released an untitled album. Forgoing the experimentalism of Twin Infinitives, the band opted for a more lo-fi approach. The arguably atypical lyricism and sonic atonality of their first two albums was largely abandoned in favor of a stripped, direct sound. They also added a percussionist named Rob Armstrong for a short period, in 1995, they released Thank You, recorded almost completely live in the studio with producer David Briggs. While the band received mainstream exposure during their time on Virgin, Virgin was reportedly unhappy with Sweet Sixteen. The band was unwilling to record a record for the label.

When Royal Trux broke up in 2000, right after the release of their last album, Pound for Pound, it seemed for good. As the years went by, Herrema kept busy with bands like RTX and Black Bananas, as well as styling models for Playboy and designing clothes for Volcom and Feathered Fish. Hagerty, on the other hand, made music under his own name as well as the Howling Hex. For years, the two weren't speaking, and, when asked in interviews, neither of them expressed much interest in a reunion

The album is White Stuff, the first new Royal Trux studio album since the pair reformed in 2015, which I’m duty bound to point out sounds pretty good: a fittingly wild, strange, angular follow-up to 2000’s Pound for Pound. Fat Possum, meanwhile, is the label that recently signed the duo and which is now, perhaps understandably, engaged in what Hagerty claims is a desperate attempt to try to salvage the band’s reunion, of which this interview forms part. They made a succession of fantastic albums – Cats and Dogs, Thank You, Accelerator – that lurched between musical styles, from the acoustic blues of Junkie Nurse to the astonishing Stevie (For Steven S), a paean to Steven Seagal that sounded like an 80s AOR band being pushed down a flight of stairs. Indeed, their albums were so fantastic that, even today, they manage to discuss each other’s contributions with genuine respect.

Royal Trux is the eponymously titled debut studio album by noise rock band Royal Trux. It was released in 1988 as an LP on Royal Records, then reissued in 1993 as a CD on Drag City. All tracks written by Neil Hagerty and Jennifer Herrema. Neil Hagerty – vocals, guitar, percussion, production. Jennifer Herrema – vocals, organ, percussion, production.
