When I was a young boy living in rural south Western Australia, in a small town called Pinjarra, we’d often go up to the ‘big smoke’ and spend a day in Freo. The dream was coming true in real time. If this wasn’t the moment to act then there never was one. The next day I contacted a fellow musician, Sharon McDonald, and asked if she could help me record something. I used these instrumentals in a way, to find my own cultural identity, drawing from my Irish & Bulgarian roots.
John Butler is the first full-length album by the John Butler Trio, released 27 December 1998. It was recorded at Studio Couch, Fremantle and engineered by George Nikoloudis and Shaun O'Callaghan, mixed by Shaun O'Callaghan and George Nikoloudis and mastered by Shaun O'Callaghan and Richard Mahony at Studio Couch and Toad Hall. All music and lyrics were written, arranged and produced by John Butler, except for the words of the chorus in "Colours" which were from Sly and the Family Stone.
The John Butler Trio are an Australian roots jam band. To date, they have released seven studio albums, four live albums, eleven singles, two EPs, and three video albums. The John Butler Trio is an eclectic roots/jam band from Australia led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler. They have independently released five studio albums, the last three of which debuted at in Australia, and have had eight Top 40 singles. Having developed a great reputation as a live act, the band have also released three live albums. Apart from their little-known debut album, all of their releases have been on Jarrah Records, co-owned by Butler and The Waifs. John Butler was born on April 1, 1975 in Torrance, California, to an Australian father and American mother.
It proved a hit with the locals and the sales gave him enough money to find two more members (Gavin Shoesmith and Jason McGann on bass and drums respectively) and as a trio independently release their debut, self-titled album. Butler is the centre of attention here, often eliminating the backing band entirely, but not without good reason.
