ELF by Various Manx is the first album I ever bought in Poland when I went there for 6 months in 1996. I was tsaying in Krakow, and taking coourses at jagiellonian University, which is like near that castle and court thing, where the you know cafe is inside and its surrounded by like business, most of them Polish, but you know, there is that Church and that McDonald's. Anyway, THIS ALBUM, 'Elf' helped me out immensely while I was in Europe (did not stay in PL the entire time) I'm restless, I could not wait to see the rest of the world, anyway, while I was in Krakow I heard.

The band's first album, The Beginning, which consisted entirely of instrumental music, was released in 1990 to measured success. The band's breakthrough was its 1994 album Emu, which marked a stark change in artistic direction. The band now had a lead singer, Anita Lipnicka, and now performed primarily in Polish. The formula was highly successful, and both Emu and the subsequent album Elf (1995) each sold more than half a million copies. The band won the Polish music award, the Fryderyk, in 1995 for best musical group.
