Mira is an album by bassist and composer Arild Andersen recorded in late 2012 and released on the ECM label in early 2014. It is the trio's second recording following the 2008 release Live at Belleville.

Borne from a project commissioned by the Glasgow International Jazz Festival Beasts of Scotland showcases two of the finest talents of the Scottish creative arts scene: saxophonist Tommy Smith and poet Edwin Morgan. This is not the first time Morgan has collaborated with musicians, he has also collaborated with various composers on opera librettos and his own poems have been set to music by (among others) Martin Dalby and Archie Fisher. The illustrations in the booklet are by Neil Boyce, Glasgow School of Art - winner of Beasts of Scotland Art Competition 1996 sponsored by Linn Records.

Recognising that Scotland was producing an outstanding crop of young jazz musicians, Smith formed the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2002, financing rehearsals and travelling expenses for teenage players from across the country out of his own pocket. The orchestra has performed at jazz festivals throughout Scotland and launched its first CD, Exploration, in Toronto, Canada in 2008. In 2005, Smith reunited with Joe Locke, recording the album Dear Life (Sirocco) and touring extensively with the vibist's group.

Initially receiving no institutional support, Smith single-handedly ensured the development of the venture until proper funding was finally secured. Having released Mira, his second album with Andersen and Vinaccia, in 2014, and his own Modern Jacobite featuring the BBC symphony orchestra in 2016, Smith shows no signs of slowing down. Maintaining his ever-busy live schedule, and continuing to boldly experiment with the style and composition of his music, he also remains selflessly dedicated to the advancement of his art-form domestically.

Thomas Smith MBE (5 April 1945 – 12 April 2019) was an English footballer, who played as a defender at Liverpool for 16 years from 1962 to 1978. Known for his uncompromising defensive style, manager Bill Shankly once said of him: "Tommy Smith wasn't born, he was quarried". A central defender for most of his career, Smith's most memorable moment for the club probably came when he scored Liverpool's second goal in the 1977 European Cup Final against Borussia Mönchengladbach

Tommy Smith began playing the tenor saxophone in school on a Scottish housing estate near Edinburgh, and was encouraged by his teachers there to develop. It is a matter of record that he was advanced enough to win a place at the prestigious Berklee College of Music by the time he was fifteen. A massive fund-raising effort, which began in the local community and spread further afield, allowed him to take up that appointment a year later in 1984
