In an Australian context, South Sea Islanders refers to Australian descendants of Pacific Islanders from more than 80 islands in the South Seas – including the Melanesian archipelagoes of the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Vanuatu – who were kidnapped or recruited between the mid to late 19th century as labourers in the sugarcane fields of Queensland. Some were kidnapped or tricked (or "blackbirded") into long-term indentured service.

Emblematical Print on the South Sea Scheme (also known as The South Sea Scheme) is an early print by William Hogarth, created in 1721 and widely published from 1724. It caricatures the financial speculation, corruption and credulity that caused the South Sea Bubble in England in 1720–1.

The South Sea Bubble. All through history, one subject appears again and again. In 1720, in return for a loan of £7 million to finance the war against France, the House of Lords passed the South Sea Bill, which allowed the South Sea Company a monopoly in trade with South America. The company underwrote the English National Debt, which stood at £30 million, on a promise of 5% interest from the Government.

South America is a place of irrepressible energy - from the rainforests to the desert, Silversea's South America Cruises truly showcase this continent of dramatic extremes. Here you can trace the vast empire of the Incas, roam the pampas with the gauchos, or glimpse an Andean condor riding the currents of the Altiplano. Only a South American Cruise lets you delve deeper and experience more. And that's only with Silversea.

The South Sea Company was founded in 1711 by the Lord Treasurer Robert Harley and John Blunt, the former director of the Sword Blade Company. During this time, most of the Americas were being colonized and Europeans used the term "South Seas" to refer to South America and other lands located in the surrounding waters. By 1717, the South Sea Company had assumed an additional £2 million worth of government debt. By then, government spending for the United Kingdom had reached £6. million, which the government was able to afford by lowering the interest rate on its debt.
