With their fifth album, 'Hall of the Mountain Grill,' which was released on Sept. 6, 1974, Hawkwind had the unenviable task of following up what is, perhaps, the definitive Hawkwind album, the classic 'Space Ritual. That album, recorded live, presented the band in full flight, in their natural habitat, something their previous three studio efforts were unable to do fully. Hawkwind would make one more album, 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time,' before ousting Lemmy from the band, leaving him to follow his own, distinct path to the formation of Motorhead. Hawkwind would, of course, carry on for decades to come, and though many more great albums would be made including 'Quark, Strangeness and Charm' and 'Hawklords,' 'Hall of the Mountain Grill' stands as the high water mark of the band's early years, with all key elements of the band gelling in harmony.

The album's title was a nod to Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and to a Portobello Road cafe called The Mountain Grill (now closed), frequented by the band in the early 1970s. The cover of a derelict spaceship in the mists of an alien lagoon was painted by the band's regular artistic collaborator, Barney Bubbles. In November and December 1973, Hawkwind undertook their first live tour of North America taking in ten dates The group continued touring heavily around Britain and Ireland from December into February under the banner "The Ridiculous Roadshow with the Silly Hawkwind Brothers". By this time, their live set had been revamped and contained what would become the bulk of this album.

The album also features one of the coolest album covers of the 70's in my opinion. Long before I ever delved into Hawkwind I had seen this album cover in record bins for years and always thought about picking it up just for the cover alone. Many Hawkwind fans consider this their best studio album and I would agree that it ranks right up there. The band are in fine form and continue their space rock explorations here.
