In his landmark documentary, "The Idea of North", Glenn Gould used a technique he called contrapuntal radio. Today, Mark Laurie reinterprets the technique to explore the landscape of the pianist’s life – and his ideas about music and radio. Pacsu collaborated with Gould on his Silver Jubilee Album in 1980. She acted as a moderator in a scripted discussion between Gould's various comic personae and her own alter-ego, Márta Hortaványi, a Marxist musicologist from Hungary. Vincent Tovell was a prominent producer of arts, history, and science television programming for the CBC.
The Idea of North' was agreed on - borrowed from a radio show from the 1960s - an album was made and launched, and some offers of work started coming in. It was late 1997. In 1998 the four friends decided to transform solo careers into a full time 'gig' as The Idea of North. At the end of 2001, after two albums and more and more requests to perform in a surprisingly wide variety of settings, much had been achieved. A solid fan base, regular gigs at legendary clubs, annual national and occasional international touring. The third album, a re-record of the best of the first two, with the new line-up, proved a good move. It reached on the national jazz chart and was the highest ever seller in jazz for the label (ABC Classics & Jazz). Further evidence for the group that they were onto something. The fourth album ushered in a new era of international invitations. Festivals, concert performances, vocal clinics.
The Idea of North has defied time, and the short lifespan that is the inevitable fate of so many talented ensembles, by continuously producing recordings of quality. Live at The Brisbane Powerhouse is a classic, evoking the kind of thrill only possible while listening to music that is to be treasured and held in the heart long after the curtain comes down.
Nowhere Now Here by MONO, released 25 January 2019 1. God Bless 2. After You Comes the Flood 3. Breathe 4. Nowhere, Now Here 5. Far and Further 6. Sorrow 7. Parting 8. Meet Us Where the Night Ends 9. Funeral Song 10. Vanishing, Vanishing Maybe The conflict and correlation between dark and light is a universal theme with a historically rich history. Musically, perhaps no band in the 21st Century has mined that relationship more consistently or effectively than Japan’s MONO. Nowhere Now Here also sees MONO’s first-ever lineup change, adding new drummer Dahm Majuri Cipolla (The Phantom Family Halo) to the core trio of Goto, Tamaki, and Yoda. Tamaki also makes her vocal debut here, singing into the shadows of vintage Nico on the poetically hazy Breathe. The unlikely career of MONO has taken them to virtually every corner of the planet, several times over.
