Rudy Van Gelder, left, with Blue Note co-founder Alfred Lion. Blue Note’s founders, Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, signed some of the most brilliant musical minds in modern jazz. From Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis to John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, they recorded the music’s best and biggest names. Lion had been impressed by the audio quality of a session by Gil Mellé, recorded by the engineer at his Hackensack studio. Lion wanted to replicate the album’s sound at the label’s usual recording home, WOR studios in New York City, but was told by its resident engineer that it wasn’t possible and that he should contact the person who made the Mellé recording. And that’s how Blue Note found the man who would give them their classic sound.
Rudolph Van Gelder (November 2, 1924 – August 25, 2016) was an American recording engineer who specialized in jazz. Over more than half a century, he recorded several thousand sessions, with musicians including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver and Grant Green. He worked with many record companies but was most closely associated with Blue Note Records.
Please note that this article only addresses Rudy Van Gelder’s methods regarding the Blue Note label and does not address his practices with respect to other labels. Put your hands together and thank Richard Capeless, writing as DGMono, for his scholarly efforts to nail down definitively what this stereo thing was all about. For stereo records made after May ’59, I think the concern is that there would be an inferior balance due to the theoretical 3 db drop in the center signal when unfolding from the mono balance. I would like to point out that 1. we don’t know the extent to which Van Gelder and Lion were monitoring in mono and/or stereo at Englewood Cliffs, and 2. I’ve tried folding stereo Blue Note records together, and the piano and bass–the centered instruments–don’t sound any louder to me.
