Isle Royale National Park is an American national park consisting of Isle Royale and hundreds of adjacent islands, as well as the surrounding waters of Lake Superior, in the state of Michigan. The wolves of Isle Royale need us! Let's find a way to bring more wolves to th. .Around 25,000 people set foot on the island each year, but sometimes that number drops to around 15,000. To put that in perspective, over 10 million people visited Great Smoky Mountains National Park last year, and the Grand Canyon just eclipsed 6 million annual visitors for the first time. More people visit Yellowstone in a single day than Isle Royale sees in a year.

Eleven new wolves now call Isle Royale home, bringing the total to fifteen at the park! NPS partnered with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to transport seven males and four females from Ontario’s mainland as well as Michipicoten Island in late February and mid-March. These new wolves were in jeopardy as their food sources were running out on the Canadian island. One of the new females is also believed to be pregnant.
Isle Royale, the principal island of Isle Royale National Park in Michigan in the United States, is an isolated island with little migration of animals into and out of the island, and as a national park, human interaction and impact on the two species is also limited. Both the wolves and the moose first became established populations on Isle Royale in the 1900s. Over the fifty years of the study, the populations of both moose and wolves have shown repeated spikes and declines and have not settled to a balanced relationship
The call of the wild in northern Michigan's Isle Royale National Park may be losing one of its voices: that of the gray wolf. In 2009, scientists documented about 24 wolves living on this remote, forested island in Lake Superior (map). But as of February 2014, that population has dwindled to nine-the second lowest total ever recorded, according to the Wolves & Moose of Isle Royale Project, which calls itself the longest continuous study of a predator-prey system in the world. The reason for the decline is likely inbreeding.

The seclusion of Isle Royale provides a unique opportunity for studying the wolf-moose relationship as it is a single predator-prey system. While officially titled Ecological Studies of Wolves on Isle Royale, the ongoing study is commonly referred to as the wolf-moose project. Before being established as an ongoing study, it was known under several names. These include Ronald L. Bell, Thomas Bradner, John A. Coble, James M. Dietz, Peter A. Jordan, John C. Keeler, L. David Mech, Kenneth Risenhoover, Larry J. Roop, Joseph M. Scheidler, Philip C. Shelton, Philip W. Stephens, John D. Vanada, and Michael L. Wolfe among others.
