Ritchie Valens (born Richard Steven Valenzuela; on 13 May 1941 in Pacoima, California, USA – February 3, 1959) was a Mexican American singer, songwriter and guitarist. A Rock and Roll pioneer and a forefather of the Chicano rock movement, Valens' recording career lasted only eight months. During this time, however, he scored several hits, most notably "La Bamba", which was originally a Mexican folk song that Valens transformed with a rock rhythm and beat that became a hit in 1958, making Valens a pioneer of the Spanish-speaking rock and roll movement.
The late Ritchie Valens was an up and coming super star whose life tragically ended at age 17 in the plane crash, along with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. His guitar playing is unlike anything I've ever heard. He could really make that guitar talk, especially on songs like "Ooh, My Head" and the instrumental piece "Fast Freight". No insult to Ritchie-I think all 50's acts recorded some lackluster tracks to fill out an album. I am a huge Buddy Holly fan, but there is a reason I play "Greatest Hits" and not the album re-issues. The bottom line is La Bamba, Come On Let's Go, & Donna are essential to any music collection, and there is no better way to hear them then this Super Audio CD. I have played these tracks from this disc over and over.
This follow-up to the Ritchie Valens Memorial Album/His Greatest Hits includes Valens' last two charted singles and ten tracks from the three original albums. Three tracks were previously issued on the first greatest hits package: "Donna", "La Bamba" and "Cry, Cry, Cry". The record's labels and back cover show the title of the compilation as "La Bamba". This was also the last Ritchie Valens album issued on the first-run Del-Fi label, which ceased operations in 1967.
