About this release  .

Hurt's soothing, pleasant style of rural blues wears particularly well here; VOL. 2 makes an excellent companion to the first Library of Congress set, and would make a fine addition to any blues collection.

His easy, gentle singing voice and deft guitar picking abilities were still intact and undiminished, and where some of his hard-living contemporaries suffered from alcoholism, Alzheimer's, or just plain crankiness when they emerged into the bright lights of the folk- and- blues- revivals, Hurt projected a calm, unaffected professionalism

John Smith Hurt (March 3, 1892 – November 2, 1966), better known as Mississippi John Hurt, was an American country blues singer and guitarist. Raised in Avalon, Mississippi, Hurt taught himself to play the guitar around the age of nine. His first recordings, made for Okeh Records in 1928, were commercial failures, and he continued to work as a farmer.

The story behind these sessions is typical for bluesmen of Mississippi John Hurt's generation. Hurt made some milestone recordings in the late '20s and then disappeared. He was tracked down by a young blues hound in the early '60s, at the height of the folk/blues boom. In 1964, Hurt ran through his influential repertoire for a series of recordings by the Library of Congress.

ationally syndicated radio series 'Geoffrey giuliano's roots of rock' which was aired by westwood one radio throughout the united states and canada commencing in 2005. Sample this album Artist (Sample). Mississippi John Hurt's 1928 recordings mesmerized generations of blues performers and, especially, listeners. This CD serves as a reminder of just how wonderful each of these early performances was, rekindled by his miraculous rediscovery in the early 1960's. The 1928 recordings are indescribably superior, as is obvious from the first few seconds of the first song, "Frankie" on this disc.
