The Smashing Pumpkins (or Smashing Pumpkins) are an American alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Formed in 1988 by frontman Billy Corgan (lead vocals, guitar), D'arcy Wretzky (bass), James Iha (guitar), and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums), the band has undergone many line-up changes. The current lineup features Corgan, Chamberlin, Iha and guitarist Jeff Schroeder.
Formed in 1988, The Smashing Pumpkins are an alternative rock band (with strong Neoclassical Punk Zydeco Rockabilly leanings) from the Windy City consisting of ctator Billy Corgan. Okay, that's not true, there's three or four other band members (one of them being a female bassist), but Corgan's the songwriter, lead vocalist and the only member who's been present throughout the band's entire lifespan, so we'll start from there. The band is known for its angsty lyrics combined with heavy metal guitars and dense production. Other features include. In '05, Corgan released his first solo album, The Future Embrace. He then upstaged himself by, on the very same day, announcing that he was reforming the Smashing Pumpkins. He and Chamberlin were the only permanent members (Iha and Wretzky are on record as declining to participate, and Auf der Maur's offer to rejoin wasn't accepted), which also changed after the release of their first post-reunion album
No Sun. Out November 16th.
Even more interestingly, Schroeder described it, in no uncertain terms, as a doom metal album. Even better than that, he took a shot of a Sunn amplifier head unit, and tagged surely giving a shout-out to the doom metal duo who are on the cusp of releasing their eagerly-awaited collaboration with Scott Walker.
SMASHING PUMPKINS ZEITGEIST (Reprise, 2007) A solo album flops, then the Pumpkins return – or at least Billy and Chamberlin do. I’d made my solo album, TheFutureEmbrace, where I was willing to take an observational role, which is why the music has a certain coldness to it. Then reforming the Pumpkins came from a combination of forces. I think the Trojan Horse argument holds up. Because here I am with my solo album and it’s treated completely differently . So with Oceania I’ve relaxed and gone, you know what, I don’t have to play to any crowd any more that I don’t want. You see that attitude in people like Keith Richards. You put your foot in the ocean and let the waves hit it, and you can make music another day. Then you’re free.
The Smashing Pumpkins will drop a brand new studio album titled Monuments to an Elegy in time for the holiday season. The iconic alt-rocker's 8th studio album will hit shelves December 9 via Martha’s Music/BMG. The two-time Grammy-winners debuted the album's lead single titled "Being Beige" on Oct. 20 at RollingStone. The Smashing Pumpkins underwent another line-up change over the summer with the departures of both drummer Mike Byrne and bass guitarist Nicole Fiorentino. Fiorentino has revealed she did not work on recording "Monuments," but that she may still tour in support of the album. By: Robert Rheubottom AXS Contributor.
